'An introduction by the interviewer'
Sometimes life throws up those funny encounters that can lead on to other, more interesting things. Earlier this year I happened to buy a set of light Harrison carp rods from a well known online auction site. Unfortunately, though not at all the fault of the seller, the courier made a balls up of the delivery and they went somewhere else. I received someone elses nice centrepin instead, though sadly it had to be sent on or I wouldn't have gotten my rods.
MarginsJohn Drewett

The name John Drewett is widely recognized in vintage fishing tackle circles, most notably as an authority on early Hardy Brothers reels and the history of the company. In 1996 he published Hardy Brothers: The Masters, the Men and Their Reels, 1873-1939 . This lavishly designed and illustrated 586-page book is now regarded by many Hardy reel collectors and dealers as their main reference source. It is written in a straightforward, yet deceptively simple style. Along with much background information about the founding of the company itself, the book contains a number of interviews, biographies and photographs of the surviving reel-makers. One who stands out is Jimmy Smith, who apprenticed at the Alnwick factory in 1908 and was still working making reels in the 1970s (albeit part-time) after his retirement.
MarginsJohn Andrews - A Badger & A Pickled Partridge
- by Mike on 03/12/07(originally published on PurePiscator)
I am not really sure how I came to be standing on the corner of Great Marlborough Street, waiting to meet John Andrews, but here I was. My task was to interview him. So, firstly all the dilemmas; do I go for a formal approach, an informal approach, try & provoke him for some good material. But then how do you define 'good material'? It turned out I needn't have done any preparation at all. His natural energy expressing his views on matters just kept rolling along, all I had to do was listen, then hold in my head until later. So, it turned out as a long chat over a couple of pints & a curry; perfect.
MarginsDr Mike Ladle - angler, author and zoologist
- by John on 10/12/06(originally published on PurePiscator)
Perhaps best known for the classic angling books "Operation Sea Angler" and "Hooked on Bass", Mike has also starred in several Video/DVD productions, runs his own BLOG www.mikeladle.com and even helped design his own range of spinning and saltwater fly rods. He is well known for being a long time advocate of lure and saltwater fly fishing for European Bass and, though being the modest type he might not admit it, has done much in promoting this type of fishing. However Mike is really a great all round angler, who enjoys fishing for a variety of species with a variety of methods. What I have always loved about Mike and his work is that on the one hand he shows how scientific information and theory can be applied to angling but at the same time demonstrates a simple approach to methods and tackle. Not only a great angler, he also takes time to answer correspondence and is a great down to earth, straight talking type. He can also swear like a trooper!
